Substance Abuse, Dehydration and Sobriety

Substances and dehydration.

The NATURE'S MIST® Founder has learned, and has been advocating in her substance abuse education work for many years, that dehydration, loss of water by the skin and body, begins at birth and that many factors conspire to rob the human body of its precious, life-sustaining moisture. Many dehydrating factors are external: Wind, solar radiation, air pollution, artificially cooled or heated air. Other factors are internal: Stress, attitude, lifestyle.

Still other dehydration factors result from our exercise of personal choice; the substances we put in our bodies. This includes our choice of diet (especially if you have allergies), our choice of beverage, whether alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and our choice of pharmaceuticals, both legal and illegal.

The body's reaction to substance abuse.

Improper or excessive use of any substance...whether it's fatty foods, chocolate, caffeine, starvation diets, alcohol, tobacco products such as cigarettes, snuff, chew or cigars, legal drugs such as valium or illegal narcotics such as marijuana or crack cocaine...can literally drain moisture from the skin, eyes and body. Attempting to maintain adequate moisture under these conditions is like adding water with an eyedropper, then wiping it off with a blowtorch.

The body reacts to alcohol, tobacco and other substance abuse and drug abuse, with the same symptoms a person with allergies might show after eating too much wheat, milk or eggs: Fatigue, congested breathing passages, headache, disorientation, nausea, excessive urination, dry skin, dry eyes, dry mouth, acne, rashes and blemishes. The only differences between cocaine, caffeine, chocolate and other "narcotics" are their potency and legal status. Often, the first symptom of reaction to narcotics or other drugs is the appearance of skin blemishes as your body attempts detoxification by forcing the poisons out through the skin pores...and forcing out your health-sustaining moisture along with them.

Dependence on illegal substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine or even marijuana is worse than dependence on legal pharmaceuticals for many reasons. One reason is that there is no physician to monitor any allergic reaction. While everyone reacts differently to substances in their body, your doctor at least knows the proper dosage and possible side-effects and is kept informed of your progress.

A word to abusers.

The ideal way to eliminate symptoms of substance abuse, such as lethargy, depression, dry mouth, dry skin, dry eyes and skin blemishes, is abstinence and a clean and sober lifestyle. And the best form of abstinence is to make a personal choice for sobriety...not to abuse substances in the first place. In the meantime, an understanding of your body's physical and emotional requirements, and an awareness of any personal changes that might cause you to get drained of moisture, can make a big difference in our personal choices on the road to sobriety. For those wrestling with substance abuse or drug abuse; proper nutrition and diet, exercise, adequate water and the application of NATURE'S MIST® pure spring water moisturizer can benefit some symptoms (dry mouth, dry eyes, dry skin, rash and blemishes), help with drug detoxification and improve mental outlook as you strive towards a clean and sober life.

The Founder of the NATURE'S MIST® moisturizer product believes that concern for the well-being of others, and for world around us, is important. That's why she strongly supports substance abuse education. She also believes that such concerns must begin with sobriety at home. Ultimately, for the sake of life on Earth, we each must take personal responsibility for our own well-being. There is no higher or more spiritual calling.
